| This article outlines how to disable an unused burglar alarm system.
Introduction
We receive many enquiries from people who have moved into a property with an existing alarm system but have not been given the instructions as to how to operate the alarm system or the correct codes to set/unset the system. Most alarm systems can be brought back to life either by employing a local alarm installer or by getting hold of the alarm's installation manual and resetting the system. In the meantime it may be better to disable the alarm until any parts needed have been obtained.
Disabling the System
Disabling the system is simply achieved by removing all the power to the system by following the steps below.
- Remove the mains power to the alarm - the alarm may sound depending on the condition (or existence) of its battery back-up. A properly installed alarm will be connected to the mains power supply through a fused spur. In this case simply remove the fuse. Alternatively, the alarm may be connected directly into the fuse box or into the rear of a ring main socket. WARNINGAlways isolate the mains supply BEFORE working on mains wiring. In this case employ an electrician to disconnect the mains supply.
- When the mains supply to the panel has been isolated, remove the cover from the control panel and disconnect the internal battery. The alarm may still be sounding due to the back-up battery in the external sounder.
- If the external sounder is sounding then you can either let it sound until its internal battery exhausts or you can remove the cover of the sounder and disconnect the battery in the sounder.
That's it. The alarm system will not work at all. If you wish to re-activate the system then simply reverse the above procedure. Note that it may be necessary to replace the rechargeable batteries.
