Installing Additional External Sounders Installing Additional External Sounders
This article describes the procedure for installing additional external sounders.

Introduction

Additional external sounders can readily be added to all alarm systems. It should be noted that the current available from the control panel to drive the sounder(s) is typically 750mA and as such an extra sounder will more than likely exceed this current and blow the bell fuse in the control panel. However, the majority of external sounders can operate in SCB (Self Contained Bell) mode as opposed to SAB (Self Actuated Bell) mode. In SCB mode the sounder, in alarm condition, draws its power from its integral internal battery whereas in SAB mode the sounder is driven from the control panel. In summary, a system with more than one external sounder should have the first sounder configured to operate in SAB mode and additional sounders configured to operate in SCB mode. Note: sounders configured as SCB mode have a slightly lower volume output.

Wiring

The typical connections at the control panel for the external sounder are shown below.
  • Neg Hold Off Permanent Negative Supply (0V) - also termed -ve hold off, this is the tamper feed
  • Pos Hold Off Permanent Positive Supply (+12V) - also termed +ve hold off
  • Bell Trigger Switched Negative to Activate Sounder
  • Strobe Trigger Switched Negative to Activate Strobe
  • Tamper Return Negative Tamper Return
When connecting additional sounders, the following panel outputs are connected to each sounder.
  • Pos Hold Off Permanent Positive Supply (+12V) - also termed +ve hold off
  • Bell Trigger Switched Negative to Activate Sounder
  • Strobe Trigger Switched Negative to Activate Strobe
The two terminals below are the tamper circuit and should form a closed loop through every sounder, i.e the tamper return from the first sounder is the tamper feed to the next sounder and so on until the last sounder when the tamper return is connected back to the panel. of course all the connections can be made inside the panel.
  • Neg Hold Off Permanent Negative Supply (0V) - also termed -ve hold off, this is the tamper feed
  • Tamper Return Negative Tamper Return
The installation instructions supplied with the external sounder usuall include instructions for adding additional sounders - these should be followed in preference to the general instructions here. Also refer to How to Replace an external sounder
